Kenneth D. Carpenter (Ken), 90, a 4-year resident of Valley Cares in Townshend, VT, passed away Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, after a short illness. Born in Greenfield, MA, on Feb. 16, 1925, the son of the late Lawrence D. Carpenter and Ruth (Plumb) Carpenter.

Ken was raised in Greenfield, MA. He attended Greenfield High School and Amherst College. He was a valued employee of Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. for many years, retiring in 1988. A veteran of World War II, Ken was drafted into the Army at the age of 18, and served honorably in Company F of the 397th infantry in France. He received an honorable discharge from active service in November 1945.

On June 9, 1946, he married Gertrude (Mlickie) Malloch of Greenfield. They moved to Syracuse, NY, and then Whippany, NJ, before settling in Lutherville, MD for 18 years. There they enjoyed many years of sailing on the Chesapeake Bay; from there they moved to Houston, Texas, and stayed for 30 years. They were members of the Oaks Presbyterian Church and had many wonderful friends. They also enjoyed many years of square dancing, developing strong friendships with their fellow dancers. In 2010, after the death of his wife, Ken moved to Valley Cares in Townshend, VT, where he was a friend of residents and staff.

Mr. Carpenter was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and Richard, and two sisters, Bernice and Gertrude.He is survived by his daughter, Judy, of West Dummerston VT; a brother, Leonard of Burlington, VT, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at South Leyden Cemetery in Leyden, MA. Arrangements are in the care of KER-WESTERLUND FUNERAL HOME, Brattleboro, VT. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Valley Cares, Inc. P.O. Box 341, Townshend, VT 05353.
