Laurea M. (Stacy) Smead, 84, of Putney, VT passed away on Monday, February 18, 2013 at her residence with her family by her side. She was born in Keene, NH on May 22, 1928, the daughter of the late William L. Sr. and Ethel P. (Moultrop) Stacy.
Mrs. Smead was educated in the Keene school system, graduating from Keene High School, Class of 1946. She married Hugh Smead on November 26, 1946. Together, they owned and operated Smead Craft Shop in Putney for over 30 years. Laurea was also employed at Peerless Casualty Co. in Keene and Putney Nursery, Inc.
Laurea loved her family and friends. She entertained thousands at her table, both in Putney and Inverness, FL, where she and her husband spent their winters from 1983 to 2001. She was very active in the community and served many organizations including, president of the NH/VT Youth Association, secretary of the NH/VT Dorcas Federation of the SDA Church, president of VT Woman's Christian Temperance Union, vice-president of the Putney PTA, director of the Putney Community Center, where she also taught cooking and cake decorating, and held several offices in the Brattleboro and Inverness, FL SDA Church. Following her husband's illness with polio in 1953, she became the town chairman for the March of Dimes in Putney. Mrs. Smead enjoyed music, going to concerts, was an avid doll collector and loved flowers, especially pink roses.
She is predeceased by her husband, Hugh H. Smead in 2005, and a brother, William Stacy, Jr.
She is survived by three children, Jean M. Brodis and her husband Gary of Putney, Stephen B. Smead and his wife Deena of Berlin, VT, and Donald W. Smead and his wife Lorelei of Putney; six grandchildren, Nathan Smead of Montpelier, VY, Erin Lamour and her husband Lee of Portland, ME, Matthew Brodis and his wife Julie of Altamonte Springs, FL, Kelly Young of Chattanoga, TN, Kristy Gauthier and her husband Dave of Salt Lake City, UT and Jessica Brown and her husband Adam of Ooltewah, TN; five great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013 from 6 PM to 8 PM at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home, 57 High Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301. A funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 4 PM at Mountain View Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1002 Fort Bridgman Rd, Vernon, VT 05354. All are asked to meet at the church. Burial will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Putney in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fellowship Hall of Mountain View Seventh Day Adventist Church, c/o Mrs. Wayne MacBeth at the address above.
