Laurence Sidney Spreadbury

Laurence Sidney Skip Spreadbury, 90, of Littleton, passed away at his home of 60 years on August 8, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Skip was born in Whitefield, NH on November 6, 1919, the son of Sidney, Sr. and Avis (Lee) Spreadbury, a family of seven sisters and brothers. Skip served from 1942-1945 in the United States Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic during World War II. He served in the 3rd squadron of the 27th fighter group as a crew chief, maintaining various types of fighter planes. His unit served in Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, Northern and Southern France, North Apennines, Rhineland, Central Europe, Germany and North Africa. When Skip returned home he started his own garage in Franconia with his brother Leo for a few years. Skip worked at Cannon Mountain putting up the cable lines at the tram. He also worked at Clement Allard Garage, Saranac Co., Henschel Shoe Co. and Connors and Hoffmann Footwear, Inc. in Littleton for 35 years. Then it was renamed Connors Footwear which moved to Lisbon in 1980 where he worked until he retired in 1987. Skip loved the outdoors where he hunted, fished, ice-fished, trapped and worked in his garden and he enjoyed giving away vegetables to people. He also sold shinners for some years. He also loved to work on old cars, watch the wildlife and birds around their home. Everyone was always welcomed to their home and he was liked by everyone.
Skip liked going to the VFW, where he helped out for many years. He was a member for 65 years. He was a loving father, survived by a son, David L. Spreadbury, Sr., of North Haverhill, NH; two daughters, Diane McFarland and her husband, Gary of Bethlehem, NH, and Debbie Boynton and her husband, Eddie of Littleton, NH; 16 granchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bev Silva, of El Paso, TX; and one brother, Sidney Spreadbury, II, of Newport, NH.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Thelma (Mooney) Spreadbury, his parents, Sidney and Avis Spreadbury; sisters, Barbara Hubbard, Virginia Nelson, Betty Cady; brother, Leo Spreadbury; and three daughters, Judy K. Cook, of Groveton, NH; and twins, Bonita and Benita Spreadbury, who died at birth.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 18, at 1:00 pm in the Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Tracy Davis officiating.
