Lionel Albert Roy, 85, of Bedford, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Carlyle Place in Bedford. A lifelong resident of Manchester and most recently of Bedford, Lionel had been in declining health for several months.

He was born in Manchester on June 18, 1931, the son of Arthur and Victorine (Plant) Roy. Growing up on Montgomery Street on Manchester's West Side, Lionel attended St. Jean Baptiste grade school, graduated from Manchester West High School in 1949 and St. Anselm's College in 1953. He joined the United States Navy Reserves where he served as a medical corpsman for the next twenty years. Lionel had several different careers including lab scientist for the NH State Hospital, State of NH Public Health Department and the Manchester VA Hospital. He opened two restaurants in the 1970's then went on to a successful career in residential real estate development, building and remodeling of homes. Lionel was a "house flipper" before there was HGTV having flipped homes all over Manchester in the 1980's and 1990's. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Lionel had many creative interests including painting, woodcarving, hobby farming, coin collecting, gardening, fishing, bowling, and cooking. He loved the ocean especially at Hampton and Rye and taught all of his children and grandchildren the fine art of body surfing.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy (Bettez) Roy in 2012, and seven of his eight siblings, Leanne Gosselin, Euclid Roy, Theresa Pepin, Raymond Roy, Roger Roy, Bertrand Roy, and Andrew Roy. Lionel is survived by his five children, Dr. Michael Roy and his wife Dawn Moore of Cape Elizabeth, ME, Patricia Roy Wolf of Londonderry, Kathleen Roy and her wife Martha Friendshuh of Zimmerman, MN, Donna Chartrand and her husband Alan of Pelham, and Dr. Christopher Roy and his wife Dr. Charlene Chiang-Roy of Jamaica Plain, MA. Pepere is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Dr. Christopher G. Roy, Dr. Bethany Nugent Roy, Matt Roy, Sarah Doherty, Angela Byrne, Bryan Chartrand, Kevin Chartrand, Nathan Chartrand, Isaac Roy, Jonah Roy, Henry Roy, and Eliza Roy and five great grandchildren Noah Byrne, Hadley Doherty, Juliana Doherty, Leo Chartrand and George Chartrand. Lionel is also survived by his sister, Estelle Ryder and her husband Kenneth of Cleveland, OH; and many nephews, nieces and cousins

Calling hours will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 250 Coolidge Avenue on Sunday, August 21st with Lionel's eulogy given by his children at 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 247 South Main Street, Manchester on Monday, August 22 at 10:00 AM. Committal prayers will follow in the chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers to a charity of one's choice.
