FRANCONIA, NH --Loretta Keefe Durkee , age 103, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2008 at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, NH. She was born on May 9, l904 in Beverly MA, the eldest of eight children born to William and Mary Keefe. She outlived all of her family members.
After high school, she worked as a telephone switchboard operator. On May 9, l932, Loretta married Harvey E. Durkee in Beverly, MA. The family moved to Concord, NH in the early l940s where they remained until the mid-l960s.
After Harveys death in August of l950, Loretta went to work at Ficketts Jewelry Store in Concord. Some years later she became a dorm mother to Freshmen boys at New England College in Henniker, NH. She was known affectionately as Mom to many graduates of that institution. She retired in l969.
After retiring, she returned to Beverly, MA to be near her family. In the late l970s she relocated to Bethlehem, NH to be near her daughter and family. She lived in the Elderly Housing there where she had a life filled with friends and activities. She loved doing handwork, playing bridge, and traveling. She had the capacity to make and keep close friendships throughout her whole life.
She was the recipient of the Boston Cane which was presented to her by the Bethlehem Heritage Society and she was very proud of this honor.
Loretta is survived by her two daughters, Jane Beebe and her husband, William; Joan Reed and her husband, Leonard, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She had a great impact on all of their lives and loved them dearly.
SERVICES -- A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 9th at 9:30 a.m., at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Littleton. Father Martell is the celebrant. Burial will be in the Maple Street Cemetery in the spring.
