Former long-time resident of Bethel, Connecticut, Margaret Gladys (Dubois) Caruso, died peacefully, May 1, 2019 at the Arbors of Bedford, New Hampshire after a courageous battle with Lewy-Body Dementia.
At her request, and threat to haunt us, no service will be held.
Margaret did not wish to have a funeral; however, a celebration of her life in Connecticut will be held at a later date to be announced. May she forgive us.
Born on September 20, 1948 in Norwalk, Ct. to Eugene and Reeda (Odell) Dubois, she is the 8th of 10 children. She is predeceased by her parents and 4 of her siblings: Karen Adinolf, Roland Dubois, Louise Conlin and Roger Dubois. She grew up in Norwalk where she met and married her high school sweetheart, Anthony (Tony) Caruso Jr. During their 49-year marriage they had 3 successful and very good-looking children. Margaret is survived by her husband, daughter and son-in-law Tina and Dennis Hamilton and their children, Ashley and Dean of Goffstown, NH; daughter and son-in-law Tara and Andrew Shortt and their children, Amanda, Dylan and Ryan of Deering, NH; son and daughter-in-law Anthony (TJ) and Shanda Caruso III and children, Isabella, AJ, Lillyn, Landon and Lauren of Sanford, NC. She is also survived by her remaining 5 siblings: Gerald Dubois of Rhode Island, Eugene and Mary Dubois of South Windsor, Ct., Dorine Kravarik of Bethel, Ct., Olga Dubois of Waterbury, Ct., and Linda and Robert Jakob of Waterbury, Ct. She was beloved Aunt Margaret to her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Margaret lived a full life as a no-nonsense homemaker who loved her family dearly. She was always present and involved in the lives of her children and truly embraced her role as a grandmother. Known affectionately as "Mema" to her 8 grandkids, she enjoyed spoiling them to the fullest. They describe her as loving and giving and truly adored her. Mema didn't like to sit around and was often ready with packed bags for any adventure that involved spending time with them. It was common to find her travelling in a minivan with her grand kids to a theme park or to visit them all over the east coast. Mom was a "tell it like it is" type of person and you always knew where you stood with her. She valued honesty, hard work, cleanliness, patriotism, military service and doing for others. We have fond memories of her baking Hungarian pastry, Christmas cookies, sour cream coffee cakes and apple pies. Not so fond memories of wooden spoons, which she could wield like a boomerang or a nunchuck and we were foolish enough to buy replacements each year as gifts. She proved she was a lot faster than she looked. Her meatballs are infamous and somehow there was always enough baked ziti for everyone and room for one more at the table. Mom knew how to entertain us on Friday nights by having fun playing cards, family games, watching movies and dancing in the living room. She enjoyed camping trips, vacations to Cape Cod, being a Campfire leader, a football mom, bowling, couponing, sleepovers, holidays and anything with an American Flag on it.
Mom could often be found saying:
"Don't take crap off of anyone"
"Who touched my stuff?"
"Where's your brother?"
"Tony!!!!!@@@@%%%!!!"
"You's Kid's!"
"Which one of you poked holes in my cigarettes?"
"I am not a taxi and this is not a restaurant"
"If you don't eat it for dinner, you're getting it for breakfast"
Unless, of course you are one of the grandkids and then no rules apply.
The bottom line is, she was taken way too soon by this terrible disease and we will be forever saddened by the loss of her presence, but she will be missed, loved and remembered with joy. We are grateful for the outpouring of support from family, friends and the caring staff at the Arbors of Bedford and Manchester VNA Hospice services.
