Marie Claire (Courchesne) Roy, 84, of Manchester, passed on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Villa Crest Nursing and Retirement Center, surrounded by her loving family, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's.
"Claire", as she was known, was born December 13, 1927, in Manville, RI, the daughter of the late Theodore and Albina (Latour) Courchesne. As a young girl, she lived in Jewett City, CT, and her family moved to Manchester during her high school years. She graduated from West High School and it was during this time she met her life long love, Roger Roy, and married in 1947. They settled in Manchester raising seven children. They co-owned a small grocery store (Corner Cash) in East Manchester for many years, working endless hours, side by side. Claire and Roger spent fifty married years together until his death in 1997. She was also employed for almost 17 years with Home Insurance until her retirement in 1994. Her special interests included watching the Red Sox, going to the beach, gardening, Bible Study, cross stitch, puzzles of all kinds, and swimming. Her biggest gift to her children was her inexhaustible sense of humor and the love of song, music, and dance. Her energy and laughter were contagious. Even as her disease overtook her, she would still meet you with a smile. You would often find her listening with total enjoyment to the sounds of a Big Band oldie, tapping her feet and humming along as it took her back to the great music of her time. Her greatest passion, however, was being with family. She was a dedicated mother and a proud and loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Her love for family was surpassed by nothing else and we will forever miss everything about her.
She was predeceased by a son, Andrew and six siblings, Delphis, William, Jeannette, Exelia, Jeanne d'Arc, and Marcella.
Family members include four daughters, Suzanne Blanchfield and husband David of Manchester, Sylvia Jerzyk, of Manchester, Margie Landry and husband Tom, of Goffstown, Cheryl LeBlanc and husband David, of Nottingham; daughter-in-law Denise Roy, wife of Andy (deceased son) of Bedford; two sons, David Roy and wife Melissa, Arthur (Chip) Roy and wife Chris, both of Manchester; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bergeron and the nursing staff at Villa Crest for their excellent care and compassion and for making Claire's final days peaceful and comfortable.
Calling hours will be held Friday, from 10am-12pm at Phaneuf Funeral Home and Crematorium, 243 Hanover St. A memorial service will be celebrated immediately after in Phaneuf chapel.
