MARJORIE G. HASTINGS
Artist, Ministers Wife
PITTSFIELD, MA -- Marjorie G. Hastings, 86, a resident of Springside Nursing Home in Pittsfield, MA, died January 26, 2006 at Berkshire Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Taunton, Mass., on April 26, 1919, to James and Margaret Goff. She graduated from Taunton High School and the Rhode Island School of Design.
In 1941, she married Hollis W. Hastings, who later became a Congregational minister. They served parishes in Charlton, MA; Lisbon, Bath and Landaff, NH; Milwaukee, WI; Park Forest, IL and Hancock, NH. They retired in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Marges favorite place on earth.
Marge was a talented artist, who not only painted in various media, but also taught painting. Her ability to relate to kids, of whom she had five, made her a well-liked teacher at Lisbon (N.H.) High School, where she taught math and business courses. She used her creative talents to open a small retail store in Lisbon, The Parsons Wife, which provided supplies and instruction for many types of crafts. Her talent, sense of humor and quick wit will be remembered by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. Hollis W. Hastings, who died in 1999. She is survived by five children, Philip S. Hastings and his wife, Ingrid, of Cape Carteret, NC; Paul J. Hastings, and his wife, Marilyn, of Tempe, AZ.; Betsy H. Clauser of Winston-Salem, NC; Wendy H. Roy, and her husband, Tom, of St. Augustine, FL.; and Deborah Hastings of Pittsfield, MA. She also leaves five grandchildren: Michael Hastings of Colorado Springs, CO, Jeremy Clauser of Wilton, NY, Arthur Boutin of Madbury, NH; Amy Brookes and her husband, Zachary, of Manchester, NH; and Abby Boutin of Manchester, NH; and three siblings, Nancy Salander of E. Sandwich, MA., Carolyn Bates of Santa Barbara, CA, and William Philbrick of Chaplin, CT.
SERVICES -- Memorial and committal services will take place in June in Lisbon, NH, date and time to be announced at a later date.
