Mary (Ballas) Twarog, 82, formerly of 885 Bridge Street, died May 9, 2003 at the Laurel Center in Bedford. She was born in Manchester on March 3, 1921, the daughter of Apostolas and Catherine (Ianou) Ballas and had been a lifelong resident of the City. She attended Manchester public schools and was employed by the Indian Head Shoe Company and the Myrah Shoe Company. She was an avid embroiderer and loved to play bingo. She was also a volunteer for the Caregivers. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness, North-South of Manchester. She was the widow of Matthew Twarog who died in 1976. Family members include three nephews, Andrew Mantis of Elliot, ME, Anthony Spinos of Manchester and Nicholas Spinos of St. Peters, MO; two nieces, Phylis (Mantis) Caron of Centerville, IA and Catherine (Spinos) Leuchs of Manchester; and several grand nephews and nieces. Calling hours will be at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street on Tuesday from 3 to 6 PM. A prayer service will follow at 6:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will take place on Wednesday morning at 9:00 in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Horizons Soup Kitchen, 199 Manchester St., Manchester, NH 03104.
