IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maude F.
Higley
January 31, 1930 – January 23, 2026
Maude F. Higley, 95, of Guilford passed away peacefully at Pine Heights on January 23, 2026, just days shy of her 96th birthday.
Maude was born in Belchertown, MA to George and Maude Brookes (Bush) on January 31st, 1930.
Maude shared 74 devoted years of marriage with the love of her life, Arthur Higley, until his passing in 2022. Their story began in high school, where Arthur first caught Maude’s attention by shooting spitballs at her, an unconventional start that blossomed into a lifetime of partnership, laughter, and steadfast love.
Maude had many jobs in her life. From working at the soda fountain counter at Roots Pharmacy in Brattleboro, shuttling Guilford school children and keeping the books for the family firewood business she and her husband owned for more than 25 years. Maude was a woman who always kept herself busy taking care of her house and property, filling her days with purpose and quiet joy. Her favorite place was her sunroom, where she lovingly tended to her plants and flowers. There, surrounded by light and greenery, she found peace and contentment, nurturing life in all its forms.
Maude was predeceased by her husband Arthur and her son Alan. Brothers, George Brookes and Walter Brookes, sisters Helen Gardner, Beverly Knapp and Elva Pogar.
She is survived by her son Edward Higley of Guilford; granddaughters Christine Williams and her husband David of Concord, NH and Rebecca Stone and her husband Don of Guilford; great grandchildren Caroline and Brady; brother Tommy Brookes and his spouse Penny of Eureka, MT; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Christ Church Cemetery at a date to be announced in spring.
