Nikolas A. Valkanos, 73, of Manchester, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Nikolas was born in northern Greece, in Chrisavgi a small village near Tsotili/Kozanis on December 5, 1950, to parents Sotirea (Bazas) Valkanos and Athanasios Valkanos. He received his medical degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, completing his residency in Internal Medicine in 1977. Nikolas married his wife, Emorfia “Amy” Papanicolau in Thessaloniki in 1985, and together they emigrated to the United States in 1986, making Manchester their home. He proceeded to learn English, working a variety of jobs, and eventually discovered biotechnology, establishing a successful career within this rapidly advancing medicinal field of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Nikolas was employed by Pfizer at the time of his retirement.
Nikolas leaves behind his wife, Emorfia “Amy” (Papanicolau) Valkanos, his daughter Sotirea (Rea) and her husband Brendan Sullivan and beloved grandchildren, Harrison, Margaret, and Brigit of Farmington, NH; his daughter, Thalia of Boston, Massachusetts; his daughter Athena and fiancé Marshall Smith of Exeter, NH; his son Athanasios Valkanos of Crete and his granddaughter Zoe of Croatia; his sister Electra (Valkanos) Kyratzidou and husband Andreas of Thessaloniki; his mother and father-in-law, Athanasia and Fotios Papanicolau; his brother-in-law, Andreas Papanicolau; Nieces and nephews of Thessaloniki and Manchester.
In addition to his parents, Nikolas was predeceased by his beloved “buddy” Ted.
A funeral service will take place on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 10:30 AM in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1160 Bridge St., Manchester, NH 03104. Committal service will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Nicholas Church by mail or on line at https://www.stnicholasgreekchurch.com/.
