Norma M. (Hedin) Smith, 73, of 95 Hoyt Ave, Manchester, died March 13, 2009 at the Elliot Hospital. She was born in Brockton, MA on August 15, 1935, the daughter of Roy Hedin and Margaret (Dexter) Hedin Johnson, and had lived in Concord for twenty years before moving to Manchester twenty four years ago. In Her Life: Norma was an avid gardener and surrounded her house with many perennials and flowering bushes. Her favorite was a beautiful pink dogwood tree in the front of her house. She and her husband acted as hostess and host for many customer incentive trips during his years working for Mohawk Carpet Mills. Some of the places she had visited during those trips include Switzerland, Italy, Jamaica, Aruba, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. But her favorite was the Greek Islands. Norma was a very avid crossword puzzle solver and always got the Sunday New York Times puzzle where 98% of the time she finished it in ink. Prior to her most recent lung disease problems, she many made trips to Las Vegas and enjoyed seeing the sights there. She also enjoyed going to Foxwoods with her husband and brother and sister-in-law. She devoted her life to her husband and her children and was very proud of the way all her children turned out in their lives. They are all the image of compassion, loving care, and decency that she herself epitomized. She was also a parishioner of St. Pius X Church. Family members include her husband of 54 years, Robert "Bob" D. Smith; two sons, Paul Douglas Smith and his wife Elizabeth of Penacook and Kevin Michael Smith and his wife Margaret "Peggy" of North Hampton; a daughter, Patricia Ann Smith and her partner Susan Chase of South Portland, ME; four grandchildren, Matthew Andersen Smith and his wife Trish of Minot, ND, Andrew Robert Smith of Portsmouth and Julianna J. Wilson and her husband Travis of Andover, and Allyson E. Smith of Penacook; two great grandchildren; Alexys Wilson and Kate Smith; her step-father, Paul L. Johnson of Whitman, MA; a brother, Ronald Hedin and his wife Carol of Whitman; MA; and nephews, nieces and cousins. Calling hours will be at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM in St. Pius X Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
