Norman C. Berube, M.D., 84, died January 4, 2002 at Catholic Medical Center after a brief illness. The son of Cyrias and Anna (Provencher) Berube, he was born in Manchester on November 16, 1917 and was a lifelong resident of the city. He attended Saint Anselm High School and Saint Anselm College. He graduated cum laude and received his medical degree from the University of Laval School of Medicine in Quebec City, PQ, Canada. Following his graduation from medical school, Dr. Berube enlisted in the United States Army Medical Corps and was stationed in England for the duration of World War II prior to his honorable discharge having attained the rank of Captain. After concluding his military service, Dr. Berube completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Saint Francis Hospital in Peoria, Illinois and completed advanced specialty training in orthopedics at the University of Chicago. At the time of his death, Dr. Berube was licensed to practice medicine by the State of New Hampshire and was board certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In 1971, he was appointed by Governor John King as a trustee of the University of New Hampshire. Before his retirement, Dr. Berube practiced orthopedic surgery at the Catholic Medical Center and the Elliot Hospital. He served as President of the Catholic Medical Center medical staff in 1980 and he also served as a trustee for the Catholic Medical Center. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and the New Hampshire Medical Society. Dr. Berube excelled in football, tennis, baseball and hockey. He was an avid sportsman enjoying boating and fishing. He was a lifelong member of the United States Power Squadrons boating organization. He was widely known for his generosity, his compassionate nature, and his sense of humor. These qualities were clearly evident in his daily life. Dr. Berube leaves his wife of fifty-two years, Jane (Sellmeyer) Berube; two daughters, Anne Sage of Manchester and Rita Berube of Hanover; two sons, Robert Berube of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Thomas Berube of Manchester; six grandhcildren; two brothers, Paul Berube, DDS and Gerald Berube, DDS, both of Manchester and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 250 Coolidge Avenue on Monday from 4 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM in Saint John the Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
