Peter J. Merkes, a phenomenal man 80 years young passed away Friday, August 4, 2017. Pete was a brilliant man with a heart of gold who had an impact on everyone he came in contact with. Pete inspired people with his knowledge, wisdom, sensibility, and practicality. He had a unique gift of being able to guide many of us through difficult obstacles.
Pete was born August 23, 1936 in Utica, NY. He was the son of George and Marion Rode Merkes, both of Forestport, NY where Pete was also raised. Pete graduated from Forestport Central High School 1954 and earned a Civil Engineering degree from New England College in 1960.
Peter was a Navy man and proudly served his country in the Korean War. He was an ironworker with Structural Steel Erection for over five years, a civil engineer with the construction division of NHDOT for more than 10 years, and worked in the maintenance division of NHDES with water resources and dams for over 22 years. He was also a self-employed logger and gravel pit owner. A resident of Salisbury since 1966, Pete was on the planning board, conservation committee, and budget committee serving as the chairman from 1981 through 1999. He was a member of the VFW Post 1698 in Franklin, the American Legion Post 31 in Penacook, Elk Lodge #1280 in Franklin, Eagles Aerie #613 in Concord, and Ironworkers Union Local #440 in Utica, NY.
Peter is survived by two sons, Steven Merkes of Gulfstream, FL and Peter Merkes Jr. He left behind a special, loving friend and confidant, Lillian Cere and many, many dear friends, some of whom looked up to him as a father and grandfather. Many people will walk in and out of your life. A true friend like Peter Merkes left footprints on all our hearts! He will be DEEPLY missed by all!
Family and friends are invited to gather Thursday August 10th 10:00-11:00am at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 172 King Street in Boscawen. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 in the funeral home chapel. Graveside service with military honors will follow immediately at Mills Cemetery in Salisbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place
