In Memory of Peter Sanchez

A Manhattan in one hand and a cigarette in his other, stories of adventures and memories were told with the wit of an English major and included a month-long trip down the St. John River on a canoe, camping on the river’s edge. He spoke often about St. John’s USVI, where he worked at Caneel Bay Resort for Rockefeller, whom he met once, and it wasn’t too pleasant. He grew up running track, playing soccer and skiing. A natural born athlete and survivor, he learned to ride his bike inside a nazi abandoned mansion around 1954 while his father served in the United States Army. A motorcycle accident in his 20’s changed his life forever. Barking orders from an immobile stance, he made sure his culinary arts training from the CIA didn’t go to waste.

Camping and living simply were a forefront pleasure performed like a pro in casual style. He cooked for nuns, and he worked at convenience stores in Hawaii, where he was invited to a Fleetwood Mac party. He was once asked by a stranger what to order at a pub to later find out at the concert he was attending that evening that it was Steve Miller, who thanked him from the stage. Humor above all, Peter has left his memory and presence from Alaska to Hawaii to the Caribbean, and his venture continues further than anyone on earth will ever know.

Forever remembered and loved is Peter Sanchez.
