Philip Marvin Reed, 85, of Litchfield, New Hampshire, passed peacefully at home after a brief battle with cancer on May 24, 2020. He was the loving husband of Shirley (Buxton) Reed with whom he shared sixty-three years of marriage.
Philip was born in Washington, DC on November 26, 1934 and was the son of the late John Alden Reed and Emily Elizabeth (Chapin) Reed. He was one of five boys in the Reed household. Philip attended Brown University in Rhode Island and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Economics in 1962. During that time, he took a break from school and served four years in the US Air Force as a Staff Sargent. Upon completing school, he worked for the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford, CT then Albany, NY and Manchester, NH for ten years in senior management and commercial lines insurance. He then went on to continue his work in the insurance industry including owning his own agency in Manchester.
He touched so many people with his warm smile, gentle voice, calm demeanor and his stories that were always shared in a way to engage those he was speaking with. He had a fantastic ability to quickly understand what the people he was speaking with would be interested in discussing and engaged them in conversations that they treasure to this day.
Philip was fully engaged in public service and served on several various boards including, Chairman of the School Board in Litchfield, President of the Pastoral Counseling Services in Manchester. He served on the Advisory Council of the Independent Services Network that serves the needs of people who have brain injuries, mental health issues and developmental issues. He achieved a commendation from the Governor of New Hampshire for his work to improve the laws and regulations related to Workers Compensation Insurance.
Philip cherished his ability to live near his family and grandchildren. He loved working around the house and taking care of the yard and playing golf in his golf league
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, David Reed and his wife, Renee and Richard Reed and his wife, Lisa; four grandchildren, Haley, An
drew, Christian and Emily; one brother, James Reed and his grand dogs, Chance and Bailey.
