R. GERALD BENNETT, JR., M.D. R. Gerald “Jerry” Bennett, Jr., M.D., 69, of Hampton, NH, died April 12, 2007, at The Community Hospice House, in Merrimack. Dr. Bennett was born on December 4, 1937, in Albany, NY, the son of Ralph G. and Helen G. (Carhart) Bennett, Sr. He was a resident of Hampton for the past 5 years. Dr. Bennett graduated from Waterford High School, in Waterford, NY, June 7, 1955 with Regents Diploma. He then attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. In 1964, he graduated from Albany Medical College, receiving his Doctor of Medicine. From 1965 – 1967, he served as Captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, where he was stationed at Dow Air Force Base, Bangor, ME. In 1967, he received an Honorable Discharge. From 1970 – 1971, he served his fellowship with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, in Hanover. On June 12, 1971, he was Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Bennett was employed at Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH, as a staff radiologist from 1971 – 1972. From 1972 – 1975, he was staff radiologist at Mid Maine Medical Center, in Waterville, ME. From 1976 – 1977, he was staff radiologist at Columbia Memorial Hospital, in Hudson, NY. He then served as staff radiologist at Samaritan Hospital, in Troy, NY from 1977 – 1985. From 1985 – 1990, he served as Chief of Radiology, at the VA Medical Center, in Manchester, NH. From 1990 – 1993, he was staff radiologist at North Country Hospital, in Newport, Vermont. During the period from 1993 – 2000, he was a part-time radiologist at Monadnock Community Hospital, in Peterborough, NH and provided per diem coverage at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH and Huggins Hospital, in Wolfeboro, NH. Due to illness, Dr. Bennett retired in 2001. He moved to the Partridge House Assisted Living Facility, in Hampton, in 2002. In 2006, he moved to Bel-Air Nursing Home, in Goffstown, NH. His hobbies were fishing, boating, playing trombone, singing in choral groups, and listening to Dixieland Jazz and classical music. Members of his family in addition to his mother, Helen G. Bennett, of Merrimack, NH; include; 2 sons, Douglas A. Bennett, of Merrimack, NH; Keith G. Bennett, of Goffstown; 1 daughter, Elizabeth G. Ranalli, of Hampton; 4 grandchildren, and 1 sister, Marilyn R. Malik, of Gardner, MA. Dr. Bennett was predeceased by his father, Ralph G. Bennett, Sr., of Waterford, NY, who died in April 2006. IN HIS LIFE: Four grandchildren, Morgan M. Bennett & Eliot K. Bennett of Goffstown, NH; Sofia E. Ranalli & Nicolas R. Ranalli, of Hampton, NH; 1 niece, Tahira Malik of Amesbury, MA; 1 nephew, Jordan Malik of Canton, MA; and his former spouse and cherished friend, Abigail A. Bennett, of Manchester, NH. Calling hours will be Saturday, April 14, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 243 Hanover Street, corner of Union Street, in Manchester. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel, Saturday, 3:00 PM. The Reverend Gary Rolph will officiate the service. Burial will take place in East Nassau Rural Cemetery, in East Nassau, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Albany Medical College/AMC Foundation, Alumni Annual Fund, PO Box 8928, Albany, NY 12208, in memory of Dr. Bennett.
