RICHARD WAYNE NEFF, JR.

SUGAR HILL, NH  Richard Wayne Neff, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at age 78.

He was born March 7, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland (over Texas dirt), the son of Richard Wayne Neff, Sr. and Laura Rice Neff. He lived his entire life in Houston, Texas and after retirement, divided his time between Houston and Sugar Hill, New Hampshire.

Richard attended The Kinkaid School, Arizona Desert School, Deerfield Academy, and graduated with the 1951 Class of Williams College, where he was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon discharge, he joined Underwood Neuhaus & Co., Inc. in Houston, where he worked for 38 years, eventually serving as Administrative Vice President and Compliance Officer, with a seat on the Board. He served on a variety of other boards, including the Alley Theater and Crisis Hotline. Richard was a member of the Bayou Club of Houston, the Eagle Lake Rod and Gun Club, Dancers, the Profile Club of Franconia, New Hampshire, and various other organizations during his life. He served on the vestry of St. Martin's Episcopal Church. Richard was an avid collector, bird hunter, and an acknowledged expert on Colt firearms. He was an accomplished woodworker and builder of model ships.

Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Marlene Johnson Neff; his daughter, Carla Neff Ohls and her husband, Mark Stephen Ohls, grandchildren, Harrison Geyer Ohls and Laura Rice Ohls; his son, Richard Wayne Neff III, and his wife, Emily Ballew Neff, grandchildren, Richard Wayne Neff IV and William Lytle Neff; his son, William Wallace Neff; and his daughter, Laura Rice Neff and her husband, Christopher Keith Douffet.

SERVICES -- A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, September 18th at 3:00 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Chapel in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire with Rev. Carlton Schaller officiating. Burial will be in Houston, Texas.
