Robert N. Chiperfield

Robert Newbern Chiperfield, husband of Laurie Crosby Chiperfield of Brattleboro, succumbed to complications from frontotemporal dementia on May 4, 2015, at Applewood Rehabilitation Center, Winchester, NH. Born in Peoria, IL in 1934, he was the son of Robert Bruce and Katherine Alice (Newbern) Chiperfield.

Bob grew up in Washington, D.C. where both his grandfather and father served in the US Congress, his father for twenty-six years, including several years as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He spent memorable summers away from the city with family, including aunts, uncles and cousins in Illinois and Arkansas. After attending Georgetown University where he was a member of the track team, Bob served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Knox College. In 1963, Bob married Laurie Crosby at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Bob enjoyed a thirty-six year career at the U.S. Department of State that included time as a Foreign Service Officer. He served as a Consular Officer in Toronto, Canada, during the Vietnam War and returned to Washington to serve in the Department of State's Immigration and Naturalization Office until his retirement. He was an avid golfer and especially enjoyed ice hockey, a passion he passed on to his sons and grandchildren, all of whom are proficient players. One of the great joys of Bob's life was watching and cheering the sports activities of his sons and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie; their sons, Robert N. Chiperfield, Jr. (Pamela) of Chatham, NJ and Andrew C. Chiperfield (Julia) of Brookeville, MD and his grandchildren ? Robbie, Claire, Tyler, Henry, Isabel and Andrew; a sister, Virginia Larsen (Peter) of Olney, MD, two sisters-in-laws, Jeanie Crosby (Cynthia) of Brattleboro, VT and Martha Tompkins (Ronald) of Lighthouse Point, FL, and his nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends throughout the country.

The Chiperfield Family would like to especially thank Mr. Larry Earle who helped with Bob's care at home for 5 years and Drs. Timothy Shafer, Gregory Gadowski and John Walter Jr., each of whom treated Bob with respect, patience and kindness. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 16 Bradley Ave., Brattleboro, VT 05301, or to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, Radnor Station Bldg. 2, Suite 320, Radnor, PA 19087.

A Graveside Service was held on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11 AM at Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, Orchard St., Brattleboro, VT, presided over by clergy of St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
