Robert A. Mailhiot, Sr., 80, of 184 Back River Road, Bedford, died October 1, 2003 at his residence. He was born in Westmoreland, VT on February 22, 1923, the son of Joseph and Maria (Mailhot) Mailhiot. He moved to Bedford as a teenager and has been a lifelong resident since. He was a World War II Navy Veteran serving in the Pacific Theater on the USS Dougherty. He had worked at John A. Connare, Inc for 39 years until his retirement in 1982. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing with his family. He enjoyed working in his garden and feeding the birds. His first love was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 98 in Merrimack and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Earlier in his youth, he was an amateur boxer, fighting at the Manchester Athletic Field. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Gertrude (Johnson) Mailhiot who died in 1992. Family members include three sons, Robert A. Mailhiot Jr., of Candia, Ronald Mailhiot of Merrimack and Lucien Mailhiot of Manchester; two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Gertrude Ames) Docos and Mrs. Donald (Bonnie Lee) Nielsen, both of Manchester; fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren; a sister, Anna Ouellette of Sarasota, FL; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. Calling hours will be at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday morning at 10:00 in St. Joseph Cathedral. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
