Mr. Roland A. Coutu, 82, of Bedford died on March 12, 2009 at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester following a long illness. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
He was born on September 22, 1926 in Manchester, NH, the son of the late Alphonse and Rose (St. Cyr) Coutu. He was brought up and educated in Manchester, but has resided in Bedford since 1966.
Following a brief career in sign painting, he owned and operated Crown Construction and later Ambassador Construction.
During World War II he served in the US Navy.
A master woodworker, Roland crafted fine and unique pieces of furniture. Many of his creative masterpieces are on display at the homes of his family and friends.
An avid gardener, his vegetable garden was the envy of the neighborhood. His family and friends especially loved the tomatoes and corn which they would enjoy during gatherings in the Gazebo he built. Rollie was always there for family and friends and was affectionately known as the âfix-itâ? man.
Roland was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, NH Wood Carvers Association, Bedford Lions Club and the NH Astronomy Club. He was a Charter member of the Boy Scout Troop #110.
He enjoyed traveling, especially to France and winter vacations in St Bart's. His hobbies included roller skating, ice skating, sketching, and painting.
In His Life: Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Jeannine (Bergeron) Coutu of Bedford, daughter, Donna Deschenes of Bedford; stepdaughter, Sheryl Christensen of Acton, MA; 4 grandchildren, Erica Christensen, Stephen Lord, Stephanie Krochmal, and Monique Coutu; brother, Fernand Coutu of Manchester; 3 other children, Raymond Coutu, James Coutu and Doreen Lord as well as many special nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter, Debra Coutu; 3 brothers Omer, Raymond, and Adrien; and sister Aline Dion.
He will also be missed by all of the children who knew him as Uncle Roland at Jeannineâs daycare. Roland also enjoyed his daily morning breakfast with his âBlakeâs Buddiesâ? where there was always lively conversation and joke telling.
There are no calling hours. His Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Bedford. Internment with military honors will be at 1:00PM at the NH State Veteransâ Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. Donations in his memory can be made to the Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America, 571 Holt Avenue, Manchester, NH 03109 (attn: memorials).
