Roscoe E. Irving, 88, of Manchester, NH, previously of Wakefield, MA, passed away on January 21, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born on January 2, 1924 in Manchester, son of the late John and Edith (Peck) Irving. He graduated from Central High School, class of 1941A. He and the former Marjorie Williamson were married in Manchester in 1943.
Mr. Irving enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in World War II as pilot of a B-25 medium bomber in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of First Lieutenant. He graduated from Boston University in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration and was awarded the Gold Medal for attaining the highest score in the state on the CPA exam. He began a long career at PricewaterhouseCoopers and retired as Partner in 1986.
Mr. Irving was active in civic affairs, serving on the Wakefield Finance Committee for over 25 years, including tenure as Chair. In this capacity, he was known for his keen intellect and grasp of the ramifications of financial decisions. He and Mrs. Irving served on the Wakefield board of AFS Intercultural Programs and hosted a student from Argentina in 1968-69. He served as Treasurer and sang in the choir of the Greenwood Union Church. Following his retirement, he was Trustee and Member of the Board of the Wakefield Savings Bank, and Trustee Member of the Executive Committee of the Melrose-Wakefield Healthcare Association. He was honored as Wakefield's Citizen of the Year in 1988 by the Wakefield Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Irving was a member of The Thomson Club in No. Reading, MA and he and Marjorie enjoyed many golf trips. He hit four hole-in-ones over the years. Mr. Irving also sang baritone with the Boston Saengerfest Men's Chorus. Highlights were three concerts with other men's choruses at London's Royal Albert Hall and one at Carnegie Hall in 2008.
Mr. Irving moved back to Manchester in 2010, residing at The Meetinghouse and most recently at Hackett Hill HealthCare Center.
Mr. Irving was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie (Williamson), and daughter-in-law Ruth (Carr). He is survived by his children William R. of Montgomery, AL; Robert H. (Leslie) of Salisbury, NH; Jeanne D. Angel (Hector) of Suwanee, GA; Kenneth C. (Janlee) of Fairbanks, AK; Bruce E. (Romaya) of Glenview, IL, daughter-in-law Hannah of Penacook, NH and AFS daughter Marta Carot Satler (Sergio), of Ashland, OR; grandchildren John Irving, Nathan Irving (Malee), David Irving (DeAna), Kathryn Willson (Matthew), Ed Irving (Julian), Hector Alan Angel (Visola), Susan Tribou (Daryl), Geoffrey Irving, Lisa Angel, Bonnie Irving, and Brita Irving; great-grandchildren Kirida Irving, Ceili Irving, Wilder Irving, and Jude Irving, sister Carolyn Freese, sisters-in-law Mildred Irving and Beverly Evans, brother-in-law Winton Williamson, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services and interment at the NH State Veteran's Cemetery will be held in the summer. Arrangements are by Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Manchester.
