Ruth G. Atwater, 95, of Vernon, VT passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014 at Vernon Green Nursing Home in Vernon. She was born in Newfane, VT on October 23, 1918, the daughter of the late Guy E. and Fanny (Flynn) Grout.
Ruth attended the one room school house in Newfane, the Springfield school system and then Bellows Falls High School. She then attended the nursing program at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse. She was employed as an R.N. at Vernon Green Nursing Home, did private care and spent summers working as a nurse at Green Mountain Camp and Camp Waubanong. Ruth enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, knitting, reading and her pets. She was a 4-H leader in Vernon, were she taught sewing. Ruth greatest and proudest achievement in life was her family. Her priority was always spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband, Roy C. Atwater in 2000; two daughters, Brenda Atwater in 1962 and Paula Richardson in 2013; a brother, Leo Grout; and three sisters, Amy Ritchie, Evelyn White and Francis Brown.
She is survived by two sons, Michael Atwater and his wife Julie of Utah and Dennis Atwater and his wife Lisa of Vernon; a daughter, Nickie Powers and her husband Norman of Milton, VT; nine grandchildren, Lynne Snyder, Amy Garrison, Bruce Powers, Michael Kawecki, Joel Atwater, Sarah Richardson, Seth Richardson, Brenda Atwater and Jacob Atwater; as well as many great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Bayada Hospice, the staff at Vernon Green, the Council on Aging and Ruth Woodcock for the love and care they all gave to Ruth.
Calling Hours will be held on Friday, October 3, 2014 from 6 PM to 9 PM at Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home, 57 High St., Brattleboro, VT. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Vernon Union Church, 2631 Fort Bridgman Rd, Vernon, VT at 1 PM. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Newfane, VT. A gathering will be held at the Guilford Community Church at 4PM, all are welcome to attend.
