RUTH STAFFORD COLBY
LITTLETON, NH Ruth Stafford Colby, 93, of Pine Hill Road, passed away on Friday, September 14th, 2007 with grace and dignity.
Born on June 17, 1914, in Berlin, NH, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Stafford and the next to youngest of 8 children. Ruth attended the Berlin schools and graduated from Plymouth College in the field of education.
Ruth married Lawrence M. Colby in 1940 and together, they created a life of community in Littleton, celebrating over 50 years of marriage. She was predeceased by Lonny in 1994.
Teaching and education were her true professions and she retired from the Mildred C. Lakeway Elementary School after a dedicated 26 years in the classroom.
Ruth was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, a member of the Alter Guild, the Mount Eustis Eastern Star, The Littleton Garden Club, The Littleton Historical Society and a long time hospital volunteer at the Littleton Regional Hospital, graciously serving over 1,000 hours with her smile and welcome.
Ruth loved family and friends and her warmth welcomed many to her home on Pine Hill. She enjoyed feeding the birds, gardening, hiking, both cross country and downhill skiing, golf, watching the alpine glow on the Presidential Range and family gatherings. She also enjoyed square dancing and the Weathervane Summer Theatre. It was her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren that gave Ruth her greatest joys. She continued to encourage education with all of them.
Surviving family members include her daughters, Mrs. Dianne Colby Dean of South Berwick, ME and Mrs. Sheri Colby Crittendon of Crested Butte, CO; one sister, Evelyn Dube; her youngest brother, Edward Stafford, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces.
Ruths family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all of the care providers during Ruths celebrated life.
SERVICES A Celebration of Ruths Life will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.
