Sandra Ann Van Kouwenberg, 70, of Auburn, passed away on June 14, 2022 with her loving husband by her side.
Sandy was born on May 24, 1952 to the late Carl L. and Mary T. (Kubicki) Frisch in Manchester. She and her husband, Steven Van Kouwenberg, were together for 43 years before her illness cut short their life together.
Sandy was a gifted and beloved high school science teacher for the Raymond School District from 1974 until her retirement in 2008.
She and her husband loved to explore and notably have been to every lighthouse in the state of Maine at least once. Sandy loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed gardening, collecting plant specimens, and watching birds and mammals. She was happiest in nature and could often be found pressing leaves, collecting pinecones and catkins, watching “her” birds at the feeders, identifying plants on walks, watching animal videos, doting on her cats, and making bouquets from her gardens.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Steven, of Auburn as well as two nieces, Angelique Sansoucie and Nicole Frisch, both of Manchester. She is predeceased by her parents, her brother Carl Frisch, Jr., and her much-adored cats. Sandy will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends, students, and colleagues alike.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 20th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Phaneuf Funeral Home & Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street in Manchester. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment will be held privately in Pine Grove Cemetery, Manchester.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the ASPCA at aspca.org.
