Socrates James Chaloge, of Manchester, New Hampshire, Auburn, New Hampshire, and North Easton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at Copley Nursing Home in Stoughton, Massachusetts, surrounded by his loving family, on May 7, 2026.
Mr. Chaloge, age 90, was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on December 24, 1935. He was the proprietor of Leslie Studio, which he proudly operated alongside his father, Perry Chaloge. Socrates discovered his passion for photography at the age of 12, and throughout his remarkable career he photographed more than 5,000 weddings throughout the City of Manchester, in addition to countless portraits, schools, and pageants.
Some of his original oil photography portraits may still be viewed at the Hampton Historical Society, where he was recognized for photographing Miss Hampton Beach during the late 1950s and 1960s. These portraits were displayed for many years at the Hampton Chamber of Commerce.
A man of deep faith, Socrates was educated at Holy Cross Seminary in Brookline, Massachusetts, and graduated from the Winona School of Photography in Indiana. During his early professional years, he received numerous awards from the New England Photographers Association. He graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1953 and also attended New Hampton Preparatory School. While raising a young family, he proudly served in the Air National Guard. He shared more than 38 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Mabel Zogopoulos.
Socrates was the son of the late Perry Chaloge, who emigrated from Macedonia, Greece, and the late Annastacia Mandelos Chaloge of Manchester. His parents worked together as a husband-and-wife team, operating the Art Studio before merging with Leslie Studio, located on Elm Street and Hanover Street in Manchester. The family business later expanded to include the Paris Bridal Shop on Hanover Street as the photography business flourished with weddings and portraits.
Known affectionately as “Soc,” he cherished time spent with family at Hampton Beach and Newfound Lake. He faithfully sang in the choirs of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Manchester and The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton, Massachusetts, where he was honored for more than 60 years of dedicated service. He also played a role in organizing Manchester’s very first Glendi Festival and was an active member of AHEPA chapters at his churches.
In his retirement years, Socrates continued sharing his love of music and photography. He taught photography classes at the YMCA in Brockton, focusing on the art of film photography and encouraging students to “use your eyes instead of the camera.”
He also founded The New England Trade Institute (NETI), where, as president of the college, he helped guide and inspire many students who went on to become respected professionals in the trade industries.
Socrates leaves behind his loving children: Paris Kampanelas and her husband Charles of North Easton, Massachusetts; Pamela Colantuono of Manchester, New Hampshire; Rebecca Veilleux and her husband Robert of Gilford, New Hampshire; and Perry Chaloge and his wife Karen of Manchester, New Hampshire.
He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Christopher, Rayna, Michael, Matthew, Ariana (in loving memory), Christina, Kayla, Marianna, and Olivia; as well as his beloved great-grandchildren: Colin, Quincy, Jocelyn, Melody, Everly, Rowan, Camy, and Elijah.
He is also survived by his brother, William Chaloge of Lee, New Hampshire, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral Library Project.
Services will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026 at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover Street, Manchester, New Hampshire. Visitation from 10:00AM-11:00AM with a Funeral Service at 11:00AM. Burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, 765 Brown Avenue, Manchester, New Hampshire.
