Stanley J. Riel, 66, of 66 Woodcrest Court, died September 4, 2000, at the Elliot Hospital after a period of failing health. He was born in Manchester on January 13, 1934, the son of Joseph and Caroline (Cienawa) Riel and lived most of his life in Manchester. Stanley graduated from Manchester Central High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire , his Master of Arts degree in geology from the University of Montana and Master of Science degree in geology from Yale University. He was a US Navy veteran serving during the Korean War. Before retiring, Mr. Riel taught science for 21 years at Hood Memorial Jr. High School in Derry where he was also department chairman for 14 years. While at Derry, he served on numerous professional and science committees and on two visition committees for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. He also taught science and geology courses at Middlesex College, Miami-Dade Jr. College, General Douglas MacArthur Senior High School and Notre Dame College. The family includes two sisters, May Riel and Janet Riel, both of Manchester, nieces, nephews and cousins. SERVICES: Calling hours are at the Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street, Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 with the service immediately following at 8 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery
