STANLEY H. ROWINS

FRANCONIA - Stanley H. Rowins, 88, of Franconia, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the Littleton Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Stan was born on May 1, 1915 in Torrington, CT, a son of the late Zygmunt and Anna (Staszowski) Rowinski.

Stan grew up on a small farm; being the youngest of three brothers. As he advanced into high school, he studied mechanical engineering and learned to be a machinist; eventually working for Pratt and Whitney making parts for the propeller driven aircraft of World War II. Many times during the war he worked 13 hour days for 13 consecutive days, followed by 1 day off.

On August 26, 1944, Stan married Helen Radzevich in Torrington, CT. It was their love of skiing that brought them to Franconia, NH. With the end of the war and Stan's desire to ski as often as possible, the town at the base of the White Mountains became their home. One of Stan's favorite views was the summit of Cannon Mountain and Mount Lafayette seen from their picture window.

During the early years in Franconia, Stan and Helen ran an Inn for skiers and Stan taught skiing. When their twins, Chris and Cindy were born, they built Rowins Motel which they operated for 35 years until their retirement in 1972.

Stan and Helen were almost inseparable, enjoying many activities together, especially skiing, hiking, and sailing. Stan's love of skiing allowed him to ski 80 of his 88 years; Stan says a big "Hi", and he'll save a space for you on the next Great Tram Ride in the sky.

Surviving family members include one son, Chris Rowins of Syracuse, Utah; one daughter, Cindy Spicer of Littleton; and two grandchildren, Joshua and Aaron Spicer of Littleton.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, July 5th at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church. A reception followed at the Sunset Hill House in Sugar Hill.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Hospice of the Littleton Area. Please mail to c/o Cindy Spicer, 1120 Manns Hill Road, Littleton, NH 03561.
