Stella R. Merrow
LITTLETON, NH -- Stella Ruth (Young) Merrow, 88, passed away quietly at home, on Thursday morning December 17, 2015, with her loving husband and daughter Lisa, at her side. She had been in declining health for several years before being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. She was born March 30, 1927 in Barton Vt. the fifth of eight children to parents Walter and Mabel (Bennett) Young. Stella spent her formative years in rural Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. She graduated from the Barton School.
In 1945 she moved to Lancaster NH and went to work at the Gilman Paper Mill in Gilman Vt. She worked there for fourteen years, many of them with her mother and sisters. In 1961 Stella moved to Littleton NH and married her husband of 54 years Richard Merrow. She then worked at The Maple Leaf Motel for 16 years in the housekeeping department.
Stella was always active in her life. She loved roller skating, dancing, bowling, swimming and playing cards. She spent many a spirited night playing Bid Whist with friends and relatives. She spent many a summer day enjoying Forrest Lake with friends and family. Stella was also well read.
In her later years she and her husband became interested in antiquing, going to auctions, yard sales and estate sales in northern New Hampshire and Vermont. They dug for bottles in old farm dumps, taking a few of her nephews along for the experience. Stella and her husband organized a flea market in Bethlehem NH, and the proceeds benefited the local Bambino baseball league. She was the primary caregiver for her mother for seventeen years.
Stella was predeceased by her parents Walter and Mabel young, three brothers, Gordon, Dale, and Maurice Young, two sisters, Pearl Malansen, Pauline Godbout, and first husband Herbert Whitney.
She is survived by two sisters, Phyllis Higgins of Belmont N.H. and Vera Andrews of Moultonborough N.H., husband Richard Merrow, daughters Lisa Merrow and Debra Lehman all of Littleton, and three grandchildren, Daniel, Tiffany, Chantelle, and their children. She will be greatly missed by her numerous nieces and nephews.
SERVICES -- A grave side service will be held at the Glenwood Cemetery in Littleton on January 2nd at 11:00 AM.
