TAYLOR MARSHALL
LISBON, N.H. ----Taylor Marshall died in her sleep of natural causes at her home in Lisbon, New Hampshire on March 14, 2003.
Ruth Virginia Ann Taylor was born November 8, 1925 to Jennie M. and Henry M. Taylor in Bronxville, New York. She was educated in Yonkers and Albany, New York, and went onto graduate from Syracuse University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. It was there that she met and married Frank Alrich Marshall in 1947. Tay, as she was called by her college friends, and Frank moved to Melrose, MA, where Tay worked as an illustrator for Filene's in Boston while Frank finished graduate school. Tay and Frank made their home in various places in the northeast and midwest before moving to Yonkers, NY in 1956 where they raised their children.
While living in Yonkers, Taylor pursued her passion for art: she taught drawing and painting classes in her home, the Westchester County Art Workshop and the Hudson River Museum where she also served on the board. Taylor edited the community newsletter, created the scenery for the local ballet company and never passed up an opportunity to share her creativity with the community in which she lived.
In 1976 she re-entered the work force and began her career in New York City in advertising and promotions. She was proud of her work for the trade publications Dun's Review, Restaurant Business, and Hotel and Restaurant Design. She was also involved with the Westchester County Mental Health Association, Syracuse University Alumni Club, NYC and Women in Production, NYC.
In 1986, Taylor, as she was called by her New Hampshire friends, moved to Lisbon NH where she began a new chapter in her life book. She did graphics production work for the Littleton Courier for several years before retiring. She re-established herself in her new community as a painting instructor and exhibited and sold at local galleries.
Taylor took to her new community with the same gusto she had exhibited in her other life pursuits. Her gregarious personality earned her the status of social diva amongst her friends; she hosted countless get togethers for the friends she made in Lisbon. She served her community as president of Friends in Council, the Lisbon chapter of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, a trustee of the Lisbon Town Library and on the board for North Country Home Health. She was also active in the Lilac Day parade.
Taylors paintings have been exhibited in Bronxville, Yonkers and White Plains, New York, and in Philadelphia, Boston and Franconia, and are included in collections in Baltimore, MD, Boston and N. Eastham, MA, Montpelier, VT, Franconia, Lisbon, Sugar Hill and Bethlehem NH. Taylor was proudly a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendents of New York State.
Taylor will be missed by her many friends and family including her five children: Jennifer B. Albright of Durham, NC; Sarah P. Capowski and husband Edward of LaGrange, NY, Stephen A. Marshall of Springfield, VT; Andrew T. Marshall and wife Carol of Yonkers, NY; and Susan W. Taylor and husband Bob of Hawthorne, NY. She will also me missed by her 12 grandchildren. Her son, Stuart, predeceased her.
Her children share some memories: Rhapsody in Blue, yellow boots, bridge parties, painter, smocked dresses; Jackson Heights; commuter train; fish sticks, Dodge Dart; minute rice; swimming in the river, Halloween costumes, sewing, coq au vin; gardening, Louie Armstrong, teacher, Easter baskets, shooting bunnies, Christmas, Chequers, Tracy and Tulip.
Family and friends will celebrate Taylors life at a memorial service to be held Monday, May 26, 2003. In the tradition of Taylors annual Lilac Festival Bar-B-Q potluck, this years festivities will begin at 1:00. The Reverend Patience Stoddard from the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Springfield, VT will bring the group together at 2:00. Anyone wishing to attend please contact Bev Shaw, 603-747-2040.
