THE HONORABLE PETER W. SMITH

BETHLEHEM, NH  The Honorable Peter W. Smith, 69, died unexpectedly on August 5th, 2008 after a brief illness.

Peter was born in N. Stratford, New Hampshire on October 11th, 1938, to Selma Keenan Smith. He was raised in Berlin, New Hampshire and graduated from Berlin High School in 1956. He was a graduate of Holy Cross College and Boston University School of Law.

After law school, Peter worked for the Internal Revenue Service, served as an Assistant Attorney General of the State of New Hampshire and, in 1966, began his private law practice in Littleton, New Hampshire with the firm of Dodge & Moulton. He was appointed as Special Justice to the New Hampshire District Court in 1969. Peter a was founding partner in the law firm of Moulton, Smith, Samaha & Vaughan before he was appointed to the New Hampshire Superior Court in 1985. While in private law practice, Peter served as a Director of the Littleton National Bank, later Lafayette National Bank and then Indian Head Bank North; as a trustee of the Littleton Regional Hospital; as Moderator for the Town of Bethlehem, New Hampshire; and as a member of the Bethlehem Redevelopment Association. Peter was charter member of the St. Francis Icthyological Preying, Presenting and Procuring Society, an organization dedicated to the pursuit of fishing adventure and the company of convivial companions.

Surviving family members include his loving wife of 46 years, Betty Buffi Smith; three daughters, Jennifer Henry and husband, George; Leslie Grima and husband, Frank; and Allyson Smith, five grandchildren: Christie, McKenzie, Angela, Peter and Nicholas; loyal lab, Lily; his sister, Esther C. McLellan of Ashland, Massachusetts; several nieces, and many close friends.

Peter enjoyed his life fully. Family, great friends, great food, great Jazz, thunderstorms, and the peace of his favorite fishing spots were a few of the things cherished by a man with a brilliant mind and a kind, loving heart. His words will be with us forever: make yourself proud.

SERVICES  The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 10th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, located at 101 Union Street in Littleton, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 11th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Littleton, with Rev. Fr. Marcel Martel as Celebrant. A gathering will be held immediately after Mass at the Maplewood Country Club in Bethlehem, NH.
