Thomas E. McCarthy

Thomas E. McCarthy, 95, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2018 after a short period of declining health. Born April 14, 1923, he was son of the late John and Regina (Routhier) McCarthy.

Born, raised and educated in Manchester, NH, Thomas was a lifelong resident, with the exception of his years of proud service in the United States Army. During his time in the Army, he was active in the Battle of the Bulge. He later worked for many years at the International Paper Company prior to his retirement. Thomas loved reading. He also enjoyed his friendships at various social clubs in Manchester, where he loved to play pool. Most of all, Thomas was a cherished father and grandfather. He will be fondly remembered by his family, and his grandchildren will miss how he regaled them with stories of his youth; such as how at his confirmation, he took the name "Aloysius" for the princely sum of fifty cents.

He leaves behind his son, Michael T. McCarthy and his wife Rebecca of Auburn, along with their children Shannon Long and her husband Jason and their son Russell, all of Concord; Thomas W. McCarthy of Manchester; and Amy McCarthy of Auburn; as well as his step-daughter Nancy Dahood and husband Ed of Auburn; and many extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of over 25 years, Zatae (Heiberg) McCarthy, and his siblings, John and George McCarthy; Irene Balatsos; Theresa McAllister and Harold McCarthy.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, June 2nd from 9-11am at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street, Manchester, NH. He will be laid to rest at Auburn Village Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA https://www.aspca.org/ or your local Veteran's organization.
