Victor Edward Shiff (lovingly known as Vic or Poppy), 78, of Manchester, passed away on May 18, 2023.
Vic was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 21, 1944, the son of the late Morris Shiff and Lotte Sander Shiff. He was a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Bridgeport, where he received his degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked as an engineer and inventor, including for many years at Timex in Connecticut, where he designed some of its leading watches that continue to be sold to this day, and was awarded multiple patents, and finished his career at Microsoft in Washington state, retiring in 2012. Victor was a lifelong learner and a self-professed geek. In addition to being an engineer, he taught mathematics at the college level. From a young age, he had keen mechanical insight, and was able to tinker with, take apart and importantly put back together, fix, and upgrade all things mechanical, automotive, and electrical. He encouraged a love of tinkering and technology in many of the younger family, inspiring them to pursue careers and hobbies in related fields. A US citizen and legal resident of the Philippines, he lived in various places in the US, including New Hampshire for ten years. He and his wife retired in the Philippines. He loved music, especially rock and roll and classical.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Margarita (Guerrero) Shiff, belovedly known as Chie; four sons and their partners, Daniel Ingram and his wife Rhonda of Idaho, Gregory Shiff and his wife Deborah of Washington State, Stephan Shiff of Connecticut, and Roy Dominic Guerrero and his wife Janice of Nevada; two daughters and their partners, Joanne Gray and her fiancé Sean Lawler of New Hampshire, and Sheena Alipio and her husband Le-Var of Nevada; twelve grandchildren; two sisters, Anne S. Atkinson of New York and her partner Gil Schmerler, and Lisa Hale of Colorado, and Vic’s brother-in-law, Bill Higginbotham of Texas (Vic’s sister Claire S. Higginbotham predeceased him in 2022); as well as many nephews and nieces and their children.
