Littleton, N.H. -- Virginia Tookey Davis, 84, widow of Edgar Davis of Bethlehem, died January 1, 2003 at Littleton Hospital after a brief illness. She was well known in the area as an accomplished keyboard musician and a retired piano and schoolteacher.

Mrs. Davis was born Virginia Mary Tookey in Lincoln, Nebraska, on October 8, 1918, to Harvey and Mable (Davies) Tookey.

At age 16, she was the valedictorian of her graduating class of Bethany High School, Lincoln, Nebraska, 1935. She graduated from the University of Nebraska, majoring in Music. She was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Mu Phi Epsilon, and elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1938.

She met Edgar in Omaha, Nebraska and they were married in 1947, in San Antonio, Texas. Their first home was a homestead in Anchorage, Alaska Territory

She accompanied her husband throughout his military career, which took their growing family to Massachusetts, South Carolina, France, Germany, and Colorado. The family moved to Bethlehem in 1963. She taught in North Country schools from 1963 to 1986 including 18 years at the Groveton Elementary School.

Where Virginia was, there was music. She played regularly for many area events. Until her husbands death last April she was organist at the Whitefield Community Church. She also loved gardening, cooking, and sewing.

She is survived by her five daughters: Virginia of Concord, Elizabeth of Newmarket, Mable Fraser of Vershire, Vermont, Rosalie Payette of Boston, Mass., and Rachel of West Hartford, Ct.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosalie M. Tookey of Pueblo, Colorado, and a brother, Harvey L. Tookey of Peoria, Illinois; many nieces and nephews.









SERVICES -- Arrangements are being handled by Pillsbury Funeral Home, Littleton. Visiting hours will be Friday evening, January 3rd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union Street, Littleton. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Sugar Hill Community Church, Sugar Hill, with the Rev. Thomas Golden, officiating.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Whitefield Community Church, Littleton Area Hospice.
