Walter R. Hewes, 74, of W. Brattleboro, VT passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Thompson House Nursing Home in Brattleboro. He was born in Wilmington, VT on July 30, 1938, the son of the late Henry and Helen (Fitch) Hewes.

Walter served his country in the U.S. Army. He previously resided in Wilmington and Vernon, VT, before moving to W. Brattleboro in 1975. He was employed as a labor foreman for McMillian, Inc. in Keene before retiring in 2000. Walter enjoyed woodworking.

He is predeceased by a half-brother, Fredrick Hewes; two half-sisters, Phoebe Herrick and Evelyn Thompson; and a step son, James Wolff.

Walter is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor (Gaudette) Hewes of W. Brattleboro; two sons, Walter R. Hewes, Jr. and his wife Joanne of Candia, NH and John H. Hewes and his wife Christy of Epsom, NH; a daughter, Michelle Scanlon and her husband Ed of Alton Bay, NH; a brother, Norman F. Hewes of Brattleboro; a sister, Marion Campbell of Brasher Falls, NY; two step children, Barry Wolff of Norfolk, VA and Tammy Chapman and her husband Jon of West Nottingham, NH; six grandchildren, Kelley-Jo, Sara, Tyler, Casie, Cormick, and Nolan; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Per Walter's wishes there will be no funeral services. A private graveside service will be held in spring. The Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home, 57 High St., Brattleboro, VT 05301 has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walter's name to Thompson House Nursing Home, 80 Maple St., Brattleboro, VT 05301 or a charity of ones choice.
