William G. Cofrin Sr., 94, of Franklin, MA, passed away on June 28, 2019 at Season Hospice House in Milton, MA.
He was born in Somerville, MA on December 3, 1924 the son of the late Roy and Marguerite (Brown) Cofrin. He attended Lexington High School where he was a soccer and baseball star. William enlisted and honorably served in the US Army during World War II. During the D Day invasion in Normandy, he landed on Utah Beach and later received the Medal of Honor from France. He also was awarded a Purple Heart when he was severely wounded while fighting in Germany. He spent his career working for New England Telephone Company in MA where he retired as a line supervisor. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan his entire life. Some of his happiest moments were attending all the annual army reunions where he was surrounded by the men he served and fought with him during World War II. He was predeceased by his second wife Patricia (Crowley) Cofrin and his son William G. Cofrin Jr., who is survived by his wife Nancy Cofrin.
William leaves behind his wife of six years, Eva (Trask) Cofrin of Franklin, MA; three sons, Wayne Cofrin and his wife Judi of Goffstown NH, George "Rusty" Cofrin and his wife Shirrill of Concord NH, and Michael Cofrin and his wife Ines of Heidelberg, Germany; his daughter June Bowers and her husband David of Holly Springs, NC; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He also leaves behind three step children, Maria Fachner and her husband Jack of Mendon MA, Arlene Zimmerman and her husband Tom of Louisville OH, and Lynn Kardatzke and her husband Tim of Cambridge MA.
A private family visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 3rd from 10:00 am-12:00 pm at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium located at 243 Hanover St. Manchester, NH. A private family graveside committal with military honors will follow at 1:00 pm at the New Hampshire State Veteran Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Hwy.
