WILLIAM H. CUNNINGHAM
BETHLEHEM, NH -- William Howe Cunningham, 58, died Tuesday, May 22, at home following a valiant battle with amyloid heart disease.
Bill was born in Marlboro, MA on March 7, 1949, the son of G. Lawrence and Olive C. Cunningham. He leaves his wife, Carol Carlson Cunningham, twin children Caitlin and Will Cunningham, a brother, Richard Cunningham, many nieces and nephews, as well as extended family and friends.
Bill moved to the Franconia/Bethlehem area in 1971, where he skied with the Cannon Mountain ski school and became a fully Certified Professional Ski Teacher of the USEASA, later to become Level III PSIA. After spending the next winter teaching at Jackson Hole, he returned to Franconia and to his favorite mountain, Cannon Mt., where skiing and teaching skiing were his passion. He did spend one season at Bretton Woods where he and Carol met. He became Ski School Director at Cannon, as a partner in the Franconia Ski School, and continued there as technical director. Skiers and instructors at Cannon Mountain benefited from his highly professional and excellent instruction every year, even through his illness.
In 1976 he began Cunningham Excavation. He climbed back into his excavator just last week and remarked how good it felt to be working the earth again.
Bill and Carol were married on a below-zero day in March of 1983, and from then on, the two of them were best friends and soul mates in all they did. In April of 1988, life took on a new challenge with the arrival of their twins. Cait & Will quickly joined their Dad & Mom in an active life of skiing, boating, and playing tennis and golf.
Flying was a great joy in Bills life, owning a plane for many years based in Whitefield. His adventures took him to the Bahamas and the mid-west. In the Bahamas, he explored the outer island both in the air and on the water.
You could often find Bill with his family on Sunday afternoon fishing, water skiing or just cruising out on Moore Dam or up at Commerford Station.
In all aspects of his life, Bills joy was to be in touch with the earth, whether skiing, flying, boating, or moving dirt.
